Finalists nominated for the High School Musical Theater Awards

SCHENECTADY — Scotia-Glenville High School’s production of “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella” received the most nominations at the sixth annual High School Musical Theater Awards, hosted by the Collaborative School of the Arts at Proctors.

“Cinderella” garnered nine nominations, including for Best Stage Musical and all four acting awards. “Honk!” from Glens Falls High School received seven nominations, followed by South Glens Falls High School with six for “Matilda” and six for “Into the Woods” from Saratoga Springs High School, participating in the program for the first time.

The nominations were announced live on Facebook Friday by Proctors CEO Philip Morris and Gary Hahn, news and sports editor for the Times Union. Overseers created and produced HSMTA; its main sponsor is the Times Union. The theater awards are given in conjunction with the Broadway League. Winners of the HSMTA Best Actor and Best Actress awards will travel to New York City over the summer to compete in the Jimmy Awards, a national competition for high school performers sponsored by the Broadway League.

A panel of judges attended and ranked musicals presented at 17 high schools this spring, deciding the finalists in 11 categories. Shenendehowa High School, Saratoga Springs High School and Fort Ann High School participated for the first time.

Winners will be announced at a Tony Awards-inspired ceremony and show scheduled for May 14 at Proctors. The production numbers of the shows nominated for Best Musical and the performances of the finalists for Best Actor and Best Actress will be presented during the awards ceremony, and the opening and closing numbers will feature students selected from each participating school.
