Rome: Organizers of the Eurovision Song Contest said on Monday that the lead singer of Italian glam rock band Maneskin tested negative for drug use, ending speculation that had tarnished the group’s victory.
“We consider the matter closed,” European Union Brodcasting, which produces the annual kitsch-rich song festival, said in a statement.
The EBU said it came to the conclusion after reviewing all available footage from the Saturday night TV show and seeing negative results from singer Maneskin Damiano David’s voluntary drug test.
Rumors had circulated on social media – and had been raised during a Eurovision Song Contest – that David had snorted cocaine when he was seen awkwardly leaning over a table during the TV show in direct. David immediately rejected the request, claiming he never used drugs and was bending over because his guitarist had broken a glass.
The claims found particular echo in the mainstream French media. France, which was one of the main contenders for the Eurovision Song Contest, came in second after the popular vote count.
“We are alarmed that inaccurate speculation leading to false news has overshadowed the spirit and outcome of the event and unfairly affected the group,” the EBU statement said.
Maneskin’s victory gave Italy a badly needed boost after a terrible year as one of the countries hardest hit by the coronavirus and will bring next year’s competition back to where the European singing competitions started.
