KidCo’s spring session begins February 28 and runs for 11 weeks. KidCo is part of the Humboldt Light Opera Company.
“KidCo is a fun and engaging music program that helps children discover what live theater is. It gives them a sense of community and an lifelong love for music and performing,” said Shaelan Salas of KidCo .
Nine different classes will be offered during this session – from “Tiny Twinklers” for the youngest performers to the advanced “production workshop”. All classes are held at The Space (Sunny Brae Performing Arts Center for Education), 92 Sunny Brae Center in Arcata.
“Tiny Twinklers”, for ages 3-5, explores musical theater and dance techniques through age-appropriate games and activities. Shining Stars, for ages 5-7, is an entry-level class where students receive an introduction to musical theatre, drama and dance as well as stage etiquette.
“Broadway Brilliance,” for ages 8 to 11, covers basic theatrical lingo, practices, and improvisational technique through fun games and group activities. “Open Level”, for ages 7 to 11, is an online course that offers families the opportunity for their children of different ages to participate in a KidCo course together.
“Broadway Bound,” for ages 8 to 11, requires an audition to participate. This advanced course is for students ready to take a more intense look at musical theater and for those ready to tackle more challenging performance pieces. There will be in-depth instruction in solo/small group performance, harmony singing, and increased dance vocabulary. “Production Workshop,” for ages 12 and up, also requires an audition for new members. This program is for students who are ready to take their performance to the next level. It offers a deeper look at the motivations and storytelling behind the music as well as a faster-paced curriculum.
Lessons take place after school, Monday to Thursday. Space is limited. To pre-register and get more information about the courses, go to http://www.hloc.org. To view a video on KidCo COVID-19 safety protocols, visit https://www.hloc.org/covid-19-safety-protocols.html.
