LINDSAY SCHOOLCRAFT Celebrates World Goth Day – “You deserve love and respect even though every day is Halloween in your world”
Former Cradle Of Filth keyboardist / backing vocalist turned solo artist Lindsay Schoolcraft shared the following post on social media:
“On my weekend off, I missed the opportunity to celebrate World Goth Day (May 22) with the World Tribe. But I was there in the spirit.
I think we spooky creatures really have this incredible courage to be ourselves from baby baby to gothic elder. But the courage to be yourself comes in many other forms. Here is what I learned from my experience:
The courage to be yourself comes from valuing your own opinion and not letting the opinions of others creep into your mind and, like poison, stop you from living the life you always wanted.
Courage to be yourself also means leaving a toxic relationship, a circle of friends, a work environment, or setting boundaries with people who don’t support you. You cannot fully become the person you want to be if you go where you are tolerated and not where you are celebrated. You need to protect your goals, dreams, and ambitions to see them come to fruition.
People who know each other encourage others to be them too. They know how transformative and superhuman entering your true, authentic self is. Surround yourself with this type of person at every opportunity.
Over time we find the courage to be ourselves, but before that we often hide behind the examples left by others. While comfortable, I encourage everyone everywhere to practice the confidence necessary to develop their own unique expression. Hiding behind someone else’s example only stifles your own unique voice from being heard.
And finally, the most difficult truth, it took me the courage to accept: those who really love you don’t let who you are or what you look like get in the way of that love. If they do, it is a condition and conditional love is not love at all. But remember, this is a bad reflection of them and not of you.
You matter, your life matters, you deserve love and respect even though every day is Halloween in your world. And if stepping into your real, authentic self is important to you then work for it, fight for it, and be proud of it every day until you strike your grave. “
World Gothic Day celebrates the subcultural aspects of the Gothic subculture. Aspects of culture like fashion, music and art are celebrated with fashion shows, art exhibitions and musical performances. Many events feature local Gothic groups, and some have taken on a charitable aspect with events in the UK and Australia supporting favored charities like the UK Sophie Lancaster Foundation, a charity that tries to reduce prejudice and hatred against subcultures.
Delain’s 2012 single, “We Are The Others”, from the album of the same name, was inspired by the death of British teenager Sophie Lancaster, who was assaulted along with her boyfriend in August 2007 by a group of teenagers. She went into a coma and never regained consciousness. Sophie and her boyfriend were both part of the goth scene.
Five people were linked to the attack, but upon further investigation it emerged that up to fifteen people were in the area and may have witnessed or participated in the attack. Police identified “the couple’s gothic dress” as a possible motivation for the attack. The five teenagers were charged with murder.
