A new musical about the life of the famous Mexican artist Frida Kahlo is in preparation. FRIDA, the musical will feature music by popular Mexican composer Jaime Lozano and lyrics by Obie Award-winning playwright Neena Beber. A first workshop is planned for 2023
“We are deeply moved that this show will allow audiences around the world to experience Frida as much more than just an artist,” the universal heiress to Frida Kahlo’s legacy, Mara Romeo, said in a statement. “Full of joy, ahead of her time and steeped in Mexican culture, she was a woman driven by an endless passion for life. I hope this show will inspire women around the world to have the courage to fight for their dreams.
Kahlo’s life has fascinated biographers, art historians, feminists and playwrights for decades. Now FRIDE reveals new, rarely explored layers of this most complex – and ardently Mexican – genius as he follows his journey from Mexico City to Paris and New York, and finally back to the home of his birth for one last professional triumph. Founded by the roller coaster romance between the artist and his great love, Diego Rivera, FRIDE will be a full-throated celebration of Kahlo’s joyful spirit of creativity and her unparalleled gift for transforming physical and emotional pain into jaw-dropping beauty.
Additional news on FRIDE will be announced soon.
