PINE RIDGE, SD (KELO) — Students at Pine Ridge Reservation are getting a musical gift this holiday season. One organization delivered over 900 instruments today to support music education programs.
You can just see the excitement on the faces of these students.
“It looks so new! The other one the legs I always have to adjust them because it wobbles and tries to fall off all the time so having this one is really great because I don’t have to hold it and watch from very close,” student Hemiya Standing Bear said.
In total, Conscious Alliance and Tunes for Tots are donating a quarter of a million dollars worth of instruments throughout the Pine Ridge reservation. Today we are at Pine Ridge High School.
“For us at Conscience Alliance, music is medicine. And kids everywhere, not just on the reserve, they need that outlet and it allows them to express themselves,” said Natalie Hand, Conscience Alliance.
Music education teacher, Ann Chesley, says today was very special for her class.
“It’s a huge gift and I don’t know if I’ve ever had this much talent with this much equipment and putting it together is going to be breathtaking,” said music education teacher Ann Chesley.
“I’m really excited to see how they’re going to use their instruments,” Natalie Hand said.
Although there are still quite a few instruments left to unbox, these students can’t wait to get them out and start playing.
The band, Widespread Panic, which run Tunes for Tots, paid for all the instruments donated to music education programs across the reserve.
