Sponsors sought to give each senior PR-B a graduation cake
Graduation from high school is a big celebration, perhaps the first big step students take into adulthood. With the traditional graduation ceremonies in question statewide, Pine River Bakery owners Julie and John Sigafus wanted to find a way to help local seniors feel special and recognized.
To that end, they want to give every Pine River-Backus graduate a homemade cake. To do this, they need sponsors.
“I like to give back to school whenever possible,” said Julie.
“It’s giving back to the graduating class,” John said. “In a way, they’ve kind of been ripped off this year with the coronavirus. It is not their fault. It is a way of giving back and supporting the community. “
Sigafus quickly turned the idea into reality when PR-B Superintendent Dave Endicott walked into the bakery.
“I stopped and she asked, ‘What about that?’” Endicott said of the idea of providing cakes. “I think it’s a great idea. Anything we can do to make this as special as possible given the plight of our elders is a worthwhile effort. I have no doubt people will step up. and will want to support that and we can help families along the way by having a cake available. We know how good the food is at the bakery. I think it’s a win in every way. “
Inspired by a Red Wing bakery, Julie thought it would be a good idea to ask for donations to pay just for the cost of materials needed to bake 8-inch cakes for the 57 Pine River-Backus graduates. This cake costs $ 15, but any donation of any size is welcome.
“These will be the colors of the school,” said Sigafus. “Just an 8 inch round single layer cake.” Maybe we would put the picture of the tiger and the ‘congratulations’ with the student’s name.
Sigafus said she chose 8-inch cakes because it was the item she had the most pans for. Plus, it’s the right size for family reunions.
Donors have until Monday, May 18 to sponsor a graduation cake. Arrangements can be made by phone or in person. Cakes can then be arranged for pickup between May 20 and June 20 with school ID or a document identifying the senior graduate.
